Communication is very context bound. That means that what works in one setting may not work in another. That is partly the case with communication that is used for the purpose of therapy, and "regular" communication. Since goals determine communication methods to a large extent, and clearly, therapy has and should have different goals than talking to a friend or co-worker, one has to be careful.
That said, this slide show covers therapeutic communication, and certainly some of it applies to mainstream person to person communication. Included is the effect of biases and prejudices, the communication cycle(watch out because communication isn't linear), types of communication, verbal and nonverbal channels, congruency and a number of other really good topics.
Great for students of communication, but much is applicable to everyday life.
