If you don't keep up on the latest attempts to apply technology to business and corporate training, you probably won't realize there is a segment of the training profession that is pushing very hard to move the delivery modes away from the involvement of people in live contact, present in the same place, and towards the use of technology in the form of what they call "e-learning".
ASTD (The Association For Training and Development), the major professional association is a key player in this.
While e-learning proponents tend to be fanatical and prone to both logical errors and a misunderstanding of the effectis of media on messages, and a number of psychological aspects of human functioning, there will be continued movement in the direction of e-learning whether it's a good shift or not.
This presentation provides some basics about e-learning, and compares "traditional training" to e-learning delivery.
The title, by the way, is fairly indicative of the rabid, illogical obsession with replacing everything human with technology regardless of whether it fits or not. It reflects the hyperbole presented by people -- "gurus" who make their money in e-learning.
Read with care.
